A phone call turned my life upside down | Sunil Choudhary

Writer: Bespoke DiariesBespoke Diaries

I am handicapped in both legs, but from the very beginning, I have been interested in sports. Earlier I used to feel ashamed to play because no one had seen a person sitting in a wheelchair playing cricket at that time. When I dared to play among the people, they used to look at me with pitiful eyes and used to throw a couple of balls when asked. But I was not satisfied at that time. I didn't want to spend my life like this. I was also doing a job to run the house, but the worm of the game was not going from inside me. Because of this, I also used to do commentary in local and national tournaments.

One day suddenly I got a call from Nach Baliye 6 runner-up Vinod Thakur (who is handicapped in both legs) for wheelchair cricket and that one call changed my life as if I started my second innings from that day. During the trial, when I caught the bat, I felt that all the happiness in the world was coming to me on my own. Now I play cricket along with working. I was selected as a player in the first season of IWPL, but considering my performance and leadership ability, I was handed over the captaincy the very next season.

Himmat-e-Marda-Madad-e-Khuda.. For those who have courage, in them, God also helps those who do not stop trying. Many people must have heard this saying, but it is very difficult to implement it. Today we have brought to you the story of a person who has brought this proverb into his life and today he is walking shoulder to shoulder with the whole world.

Here we are talking about Sunil Chaudhary, the captain of Delhi Challengers in the Indian Wheelchair Premier League (IWPL). Since childhood, both the legs of Sunil Chaudhary are affected by polio, but the passion of sports is full of code in him. Despite being handicapped, this person not only plays cricket but also inspires others. Let's hear the story of Sunil Chaudhary in his own words-

IWPL (Indian wheelchair Premier League) started in 2018 on the lines of IPL. After the first two editions played in 2018 and 2019, due to the outbreak of Corona, our pace along with the pace of the country came to a standstill. After getting things right to a large extent, the third edition of IWPL is being organized this year. This time the tournament will be played from 21 to 25 June at Dwarka Bal Bhavan International. In the last two seasons, Delhi's team had managed to reach the semi-finals. This year we have added some new players along with changing our game, hopefully we will lift the trophy this time.

The playing XI is selected on the basis of 56 points. 11 players should have a total of so many points. Points are divided as follows:

  • 4 points for a disabled player with both feet

  • 2 points for a player with a spinal injury

  • 6 points for a disabled player with one leg

  • 10 points for those whose one leg are fine and who walk with the help of someone

There will also be 8 local players from one IWPL team, 2 from another state and one international (Nepal and Bangladesh) player.

Before playing any game, it is necessary for the players to have a warm-up session, but disabled players are not able to implement it completely. In this context, when we spoke to Mrs. Raji Chandru, Trustee of 'The Neuroaid and Research Foundation' who is helping the Delhi players with the physios in the IWPL, she said, "When players walk out without warm-up, There is a higher chance of getting injured. Our team will give a warm-up session to the players of Delhi before the match as well as a post-session after the match so that the tournament runs smoothly. During the game, disabled cricketers mostly face muscle strain problems, for this our team will always be available to help.
