Climbing Against the Odds | Bouchra Baibanou

Writer: Bespoke DiariesBespoke Diaries

One day, the little girl Bouchra goes to summer camp, and that's where she discovers her passion for walking in nature. After several years, she climbed the highest peak in Morocco Toubkal 4165m, and she discovered her passion for climbing peaks.

The years passed and Bouchra obtained her engineering degree, got married, became a mother, and worked in a ministry in Rabat, Morocco. But a little voice still whispers her childhood dream.

In 2011, at the age of 42, Bouchra decided to start the challenging project “The Seven Summits”, consisting of climbing the highest mountain in each continent!

Bouchra knows that this project is crazy, requiring significant financing, personal sacrifices and significant physical preparation. Also, she comes from a conservative society where no woman (nor man) had tried this experience before.

She begins by climbing Kilimanjaro (5895m), the highest peak in Africa, followed by the highest peaks in Europe, South and North America, and Oceania. Bouchra's dream was realized the day she reached Everest, the summit of the world culminating in 8848m. She became the first North African woman to complete the challenge of the Seven Summits of the World and the first Arab woman to climb Annapurna 8091m.

She is one of the most famous mountain climber in the world and in Arabic country, she climbed 3 mountains more than 8000m: Everest, Annapurna and Lhotse. This little girl is me and my message for all girls: “Yes, it is possible to achieve everything you want, as long as you believe in yourself and in your dreams until the end”
