Writer: Bespoke DiariesBespoke Diaries

Sayed Shah Aziz was born in a village called Sawjian, close to the border. He started playing cricket in under-sixteen tournaments and has become the vice-captain of the Indian Divyang Cricket Team.

My name is Sayed Shah Aziz Shah, I have been born in Sawjian. Sawjian is a village that is very close to the border, the firing of Hindustan and Pakistan keeps going on often. My parents have always supported me but when I was young and used to go to play cricket, they used to scold me a lot because they thought that this child is physically challenged, so if any ball hits him, it might make his life more difficult. In 2003, I played in under-sixteen tournaments in which our Poonch team was victorious.

I had a big contribution in the semi-finals, historically we won for the first time. After that my interest in cricket grew even more. I continued playing cricket along with my studies. I used to play cricket with my friends who always supported me. I did my engineering at the government college, Vikram Chowk. One of my mates named Shahid told me that we should make a team to participate in a tournament that is going to be organized in Jammu for people with disabilities.

I was surprised to know that there is a separate tournament for people with disabilities. I heard for the first time he said yes it happens at all, then I agreed and we formed a team of Jammu and Kashmir. 6 states teams apart from Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Haryana, and Jharkhand participated in the tournament. In the first match, we lost against Rajasthan but in that match, I scored a half-century plus runs, the second match we defeated Haryana in which 3 players played international cricket. After that our team's morale increased to enter the final. Unfortunately, we were unable to do it because our run rate was low but we were able to make our place in the hearts of our fans.

It was a matter of great pride for us, I kept playing cricket like this along with my job. I played in a lot of National Tournaments and performed very well. In 2019, I got the opportunity to play internationally in Team India. The Divyang Cricket Control Board of India organized the India vs Nepal series in Agra. Now I am the captain of the Jammu and Kashmir Divyang team. Along with it, recently, the Divyang Cricket Control Board of India has selected me as the vice-captain of the Indian Divyangjan cricket team.

In 2021, I have also taken over the command of the captaincy of the Rajasthan Rajwada team in the Divyang Premier League DPL T-20. The Divyang Cricket Control Board of India organized the Divyang Premier League DPL T-20 in Sharjah in the year 2021, in which a total of 6 teams participated. The captaincy of one team, Rajasthan Rajwada was handed over to me. Again next year, the Divyang Premier League season 2 is going to be organized and I have got the captaincy of Rajasthan Rajwada one more time. This time 8 teams will take part in it.

Apart from national players, international players will also participate. This year in June 2022 Lifebuoy Cup T-20 Nepal vs India was held in Kathmandu, in which I also got a chance to become the captain of the Indian team. Under my captaincy that series we won by 2-1. In that series I took 7 wickets and scored more than 100 runs, including 54 not out, I got 1 Man of the Match, one Game Changer Award, 1 Best Batsman Award, one Highest Wicket Taker Award, and Man of the Series Award.

This was my best-ever performance in any series, I got a lot of awards. I heartily thank the Divyang Cricket Control Board of India who gave me the chance and platform to represent team India. They have given a very good platform to the disability cricketers where they can show their talent. I heartily thank my Public Works Department and also the Divyang Cricket Control Board of India for always supporting me.
