Protecting women against gender-based violence is a human rights issue often overlooked globally. Around the world the rate of Femicide is stubbornly high.
Every year women are violently killed globally, accounting for approximately 17% of all victims of intentional homicides. The rates of Femicide differ depending on the specific country, but of the countries with the top 25 highest Femicide rates, 50% are in Latin America. Also included in the top 25 are seven European countries, three Asian countries, and one African country, South Africa. With a rate of 12.0 per 100,000 people, El Salvador is the country with the highest femicide rate, followed by Jamaica (10.9), Guatemala (9.7), and South Africa (9.6).
For hundreds of thousands if not millions of women, Coronavirus means “sheltering” with their abusers or killers. Domestic violence and femicide are surging worldwide. Every since the coronavirus pandemic broke out, women are dying in even higher numbers than before not only by the virus but at the hands of abusive partners with whom they are locked down at home.
Nearly 60,000 women were killed by intimate partners, former partners or family members. 137 women across the world are killed by a member of their own family every day. The Coronavirus has only exacerbated these statistics.
All countries have reported an increase in domestic violence and Femicide rates are also on the rise and we know that additional cases of severe domestic violence may remain unreported. It is time to realise that femicide is also a serious pandemic and that something must be done.
It is in this context that in July and August, MIREILLE TOULEKIMA GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ORGANISATION is launching a series of deep conversations about Gender Based violence and through the Greatness Engineering Hour Show featuring survivors, experts and hopefully recovered abusers to create awareness and see how we can tackle this serious social issue from different angles focusing on the root causes. No More Silence. It is time to STEP UP, STAND UP and TAKE MASSIVE ACTIONS before more women lives are lost.
