Is Your Hackathon This Cool | Sam Kamani

I always love spending time with people who are ambitious and motivated. Last month I had the privilege of being a mentor at Kapiti Startup Weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I have been to quite a few Hackathons, one key difference that I observed this year was that most of the teams were problem focused instead of being product focused.

Hopefully this trend with catch on with other hackathons as well. What made Kapiti SW weekend different to other hackathons is the culture of the land.

We started with a Karakia (Prayer) and singing Tūtira mai ngā iwi, a song about unity and working together.

*Sorry for my cacophonous singing!

And we finished the hackathon with gifting Kohatu to Judges and Mentors. Kohatu is the Maori word for Stone/Rock.

For me mentoring was truly a fun and uplifting experience. If you have participated and never mentored before then I would highly recommend you to mentor and give back to your community.
