No Early Morning Workshops for Middle and High School Students...WHY? | Zeeshan Zafar

Why don’t I conduct any training session or workshop early in the morning or before 8.30 am—both in work days and free days? Parents of Middle and High School Students often question me. I’m an utter owl! But, that’s not the obvious answer. The answer is research-based—not just anecdotal evidence.

Here is the clear explanation:

Sleep Sleep Sleep Middle and High School Students!

Try not using your brains before eight o’clock in the morning!

Why?

‘Cause you experience the most profound change in chronobiology of your lifetimes around puberty. Roenneberg—the world’s best known chronobiologist says. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement calling for middle schools and high schools to begin no earlier than 8.30 a.m.

Why?

‘Cause delaying school start times has the potential for the greatest population impact in boosting teenage learning and well-being. Also, delaying school starting times improves motivation, boosts emotional well-being, reduces depression, and lessens impulsivity.

A study supported that schools that begin after 8.35 a.m. have gently rose the attendance and decline the tardiness. Students earned higher grades in core subjects and improved their performances on state and national standardised tests.

The benefits aren’t just for high school students—college students either. The optimal time for most college classes is after 11 a.m. in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Hope you understand now—why don't I conduct any training session or workshop for middle and high school students before 8.30 a.m.
